A Christmas Field Trip

Our Chamber of Commerce usually meets in one of the courtrooms at our local courthouse.

I was happy at our last meeting when I saw a Christmas tree by the judge’s bench.

This past Saturday, before the Christmas parade, I went inside the courthouse again and noticed ways other government offices are showing the world that it’s Christmas. Here is the courthouse Christmas tree . . .

. . . and this is the entrance to the county mayor’s office.

Across the hall is this Christmas village.

The doorway into the Register of Deeds office was festive.

Even the special stairs for judges and law enforcement personnel . . .

. . . and the water fountain had decorations.

I think it would be fun to take your children around town on a Christmas scavenger hunt. Here are some ideas you could try.

  • The next time you do errands with the children, you could simply tell everyone to point out every decoration they see to everyone else.
  • You could visit a bank, government offices, and stores and see how many decorations you can find. As you look for decorations, you could explain to your children what people in those various places do. It would be a fun introduction to civics.
  • You could take photos of decorations at various locations and make a digital presentation for daddy or the grandparents, entitled: “Christmas Around Our Town.”
  • Your children who enjoy art could illustrate what they saw and make a book called Christmas Around Our Town.

Of course, it is always fun to take a ride looking for Christmas lights. It’s a fun activity for people of all ages, so maybe you could take an elderly person along, too. Perhaps this year you can look at Christmas lights some evening and take a decoration-hunting Christmas field trip during the day sometime.

When I was doing an errand in Cookeville yesterday morning, I noticed a decoration on their courthouse lawn. As always, they have a pretty nativity scene, reminding everyone that Jesus was born.

But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
Too little to be among the clans of Judah,
From you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel.
His goings forth are from long ago,
From the days of eternity.
Micah 5:2

When the angels had gone away from them into heaven,
the shepherds began saying to one another,
“Let us go straight to Bethlehem then,
and see this thing that has happened
which the Lord has made known to us.”
So they came in a hurry
and found their way to Mary and Joseph,
and the baby as He lay in the manger.
Luke 2:15-16
