A Five-Letter Description of Homeschool Success

Ray and I well remember a scary Wednesday night in 1991. As our church gathered for Wednesday night Bible study, foremost in our minds was the announcement that President George Herbert Walker Bush had initiated Operation Desert Storm to free the country of Kuwait from invading Iraqi forces.

This display at the George Bush Presidential Library illustrated the coalition of nations President Bush formed to stop Iraq's efforts to conquer Kuwait.

We soon learned that Ray’s brother Alan would be one of those soldiers. Among his responsibilities was supplying soldiers with what they needed to do their jobs. Soldiers needed equipment; Alan was responsible to equip.

Equip. That’s the five-letter word that describes homeschooling success. We can’t teach our children everything in the whole wide universe, but we can equip our children for the life ahead of them.

The purpose of the letter to the Hebrews is to keep discouraged Christians from giving up and going back to the world. Just before the end of the last chapter, the writer tells those discouraged Christians:

Now the God of peace,
who brought up from the dead
the great Shepherd of the sheep
through the blood of the eternal covenant,
even Jesus our Lord,

equip you

in every good thing to do His will,
working in us that which is pleasing in His sight,
through Jesus Christ,
to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.
Hebrews 13:20-21

Correction for mama’s who read yesterday’s post by email:
Children need a mama — a sweet, soft, cushy . . . mama. (not a chusy mama!)
