A Mama’s Valentine’s Day

Love is the reality at the center of a mama’s heart. A mama’s love is:

  • an emotion, and
  • a commitment to take action for what is best for her children.

One of the things that is best for a mama’s children is that she be their mama. When you are a homeschooling mama, it’s easy to get bogged down in that first word “homeschooling,” and not concentrate enough on the second one, being a mama. Children need a mama — a sweet, soft, cushy, loving, kind, gentle, devoted, caring mama. The apostle Paul compared himself to that kind of mama:

But we proved to be gentle among you,
as a nursing mother tenderly cares
for her own children.
1 Thessalonians 2:7

One way to make this a “Happy Valentine’s Day” is to concentrate today on the mama part. Valentine’s Day is a day for hugs, kisses, and cuddles. Think of something especially mama-ing you can do today.

One of the best things a mama can do for her children is to love their daddy. When homeschooling responsibilities fill your days, it is sometimes easy to give your husband the dregs that are left over after you’ve given to everyone else all day.

On this Valentine’s Day, I have an idea for the perfect gift you can give to your husband. This gift plays double-duty. It won’t just bless your husband; it will bless your children, too.

Think about the last time you wrapped up a gift for a special occasion, the time you didn’t toss it in a gift bag with tissue paper. You actually wrapped it with paper and tape and put a big and beautiful bow on top.

Wrap yourself up in your prettiest clothes and give your husband a big smile when he returns from working for you and your children today. Look so good that your children will ask you if you’re going somewhere. Husbands and children, too, are blessed by a devoted, godly woman and mama who remembers the joy of being both.

Her children rise up and bless her;
Her husband also, and he praises her, saying:
“Many daughters have done nobly,
But you excel them all.”
Proverbs 31:28-29
