Abundance
Our daughter went grocery shopping for both of us last week while Ray and I enjoyed their children. I asked if she saw anything unusual. “Not really,” she replied, “except I saw one woman wearing a mask with a cart full of toilet paper.”
We always had a thermometer when our children were at home, but Ray and I realized recently that we don’t have one now. When I decided to look for one on Amazon.com, I found lots of them, but not ones that were going to be in my mailbox very soon unless I wanted to pay an exorbitant price. I went to Walgreens.com. They had many out of stock choices. Then, I called our local pharmacy. No, they didn’t have any either and didn’t know when they could get any in. I’m not worried. God is greater than a thermometer shortage.
The other day when I read about Jesus feeding the 5,000, I marveled at the abundance in that event on the mountain by the Sea of Galilee. When Jesus sat down on the mountain with His disciples, He looked up and saw a large crowd coming to Him. Jesus asked his disciple Phillip:
“Where are we to buy bread,
so that these may eat?”
John 6:5
People have been asking lots of “Where are we going to buy?” questions lately. Jesus knew exactly where He was going to get bread. He only asked Philip the question to test him.
Phillip was shocked. He answered that it would take two hundred days’ wages to get enough bread for each person to have a little.
Then Jesus did one of the things He does so well. He supplied the crowd Himself — with an abundance! There on the grassy mountain He used five barley loaves and two fish belonging to a boy in the crowd to feed 5,000 men until they had all they wanted — and you know how hungry men can be! They even had leftovers. That’s always nice, isn’t it?
In this time of shortages, let’s trust the God of abundance — with His promises to all generations.
Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly
beyond all that we ask or think,
according to the power that works within us,
to Him be the glory in the church
and in Christ Jesus to all generations
forever and ever. Amen.
