“Because It’s Free”

Every Monday through Friday we meet with the Notgrass History team via Zoom. We check on each other and share what we are working on. Our customer service reps also share interesting communication with people who call with questions.

On Thursday one of them told about a mama who called to talk about high school curriculum. As I am sure comes as no surprise to you, mamas sometimes need to chat. This mama said that her high school student was taking a dual enrollment course for history, but that she had decided to pull her student out of the course. The reason was ungodly content.

To her dismay (and to our dismay as we listened to this story), that ungodly content was coming from a course at the Christian college she had chosen for her student. When this mama talked with the teacher or officials (I’m not sure which) at the Christian college about why the school was using these ungodly materials, the answer was, “Because it’s free.”

Free content can be of excellent quality (and this is certainly not an advertisement for our curriculum), but ungodly content placed into the hearts and minds of young people is not free. It comes at a very high cost.

Beware. Ask questions. Be careful not to assume too much when it comes to the content that your children hear, read, and watch. Their hearts are too precious not to.

Examine me, O Lord, and try me;
Test my mind and my heart.
Psalm 26:2
