Boys Who Work with Their Hands

I am pretty sure that in some second grade classroom this morning, there is a little boy who doesn’t learn exactly like all the other children in his class. This little boy is really good with his hands. His gifts, though many, are not academic. He could grow up to work as a talented auto mechanic or a plumber or some other essential occupation. Maybe he will, but sadly he may have to spend ten more years feeling like a misfit before that happens.

I’m so thankful that every day and all day long you can help your children use the talents God gave them.

At the historical museum last Friday, I enjoyed again the wonderful models that volunteer Eugene Wood made for the museum. By sharing his gift of working with his hands, visitors can envision Jackson County’s Fort Blount where early pioneers stopped on their way further west in Tennessee, . . .

. . . and the Rowena steamboat, which delivered supplies on the Cumberland River in the early 1900s.

The apostle Paul wrote to the Christians in Thessalonica:

. . . make it your ambition
to lead a quiet life
and attend to your own business
and work with your hands,
just as we commanded you,
so that you will behave properly toward outsiders
and not be in any need.
1 Thessalonians 4:11

  1. Great post Charlene. My son has an over the top IQ. Was predicted to be Valedictorian of his class early on. He wasn’t, because the books didn’t interest him. His only higher education was a certification in Bovine artificial insemination. He now co-manages a large ranch. He’s outdoors. Working with animals, wildlife, helping the ranch hands learn their jobs etc. He also owns his own small combining company and works in our area for various small farmers. This is all hard work he didn’t have to choose but he loves it and I couldn’t be more proud that he followed his heart, not someone else’s ideas for his life.

    Blessings,
