Celebrate and Cherish Each Victory

Yesterday as Ray and I were taking our morning walk, we saw a biker with whom we exchange waves and greetings on occasional mornings. Yesterday he stopped to chat for the first time. “How long do you walk?” he asked as he was about to cycle on.

“Twenty minutes. How long do you ride?”

“24 miles or 50 miles,” he replied.

Almost immediately, I thought of you. I know that many of you are tempted to feel in competition with other mamas. Your thoughts might go something like this:

Samantha’s son has read 43 chapter books this year. I know because she told me. My little boy has read 2 beginner readers.

Sarah’s daughter loves school. Getting through the school day for us is like pulling teeth.

Taylor’s family takes wonderful vacations. All we can afford is tent camping.

I don’t know the bike rider’s story. Maybe he’s an over-achiever. Maybe he’s been very ill and this is part of his recovery. Maybe he has nothing else to live for. Maybe he loves to bike. Maybe his daddy was a biker and it brings back wonderful memories.

What I do know is that Ray and I have talked about regular exercise for years. Our consistent twenty minutes is a victory for us, one that we celebrate and cherish.

Let’s all celebrate our own victories, thankful for the story God is writing in our lives, while trusting the lives of other people to their same wonderful Maker.

Who are you to judge the servant of another?
To his own master he stands or falls;
and he will stand,
for the Lord is able to make him stand.
Romans 14:4

Delight yourself in the Lord;
And He will give you the desires of your heart.
Commit your way to the Lord,
Trust also in Him, and He will do it.
He will bring forth your righteousness as the light
And your judgment as the noonday.
Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him;
Psalm 37:4-7
