We like some changes, such as a new item of clothing or an occasional change of scenery. Big changes can be another matter. Some are welcome, but others can be downright scary.

Even little changes can be disconcerting for children. I remember one spring when it was time for our then-toddler John to switch from long sleeve shirts to ones with short sleeves. He didn’t like it one bit. I can still picture him trying to pull his short sleeve down toward his wrist.

Now that I have time to think about something besides a huge deadline, I am making little changes at home by tackling one little house project after another. For 25 years or so, I have been picking up $5-$8 hand puppets at places like Dollar General, Aldi, IKEA, and Books-a-Million. For a long time, I have tried to think of a good way to store them. Most recently, they have been piled into a doggie basket that sat on the floor at the top of the stairs. Finding just the right puppet wasn’t so easy.

I’ve been organizing books, too. One of the items that I brought to my house after my aunt and uncle’s estate sale is a wooden magazine rack. I have been keeping oversized coffee table books in it. I am embarrassed to say that I finally took the Christmas books out of it the other day. While it was almost empty, I had the idea of putting puppets in it. I like it.

One of our grandchildren complimented it immediately, but a much younger one felt differently. He took me to the puppets and said, “They go upstairs.”

“Do they look nice like this?” I asked. He answered, “Yes,” and then everything was fine.

Sometimes talking about a change is all we need to do to feel better. The effects of very difficult changes often last the rest of our lives. However, through the little changes and the enormous ones we can hold fast to the One Who never changes.

While writing this post, the song “We Have an Anchor” by Priscilla J. Owens came to mind:

Will your anchor hold in the storms of life,
When the clouds unfold their wings of strife?
When the strong tides lift, and the cables strain,
Will your anchor drift, or firm remain?

Refrain:
We have an anchor that keeps the soul
Steadfast and sure while the billows roll;
Fastened to the Rock which cannot move,
Grounded firm and deep in the Savior’s love!

Thank you for being a firm, unchanging source of strength for your children as you hold tightly to the One Who never changes.

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today, and forever.
Hebrews 13:8

Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above,
coming down from the Father of lights,
with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.
James 1:17
