Credit Where Credit Is Due

When our family lived in Illinois, we shared happy times with friends Alan and Barb. We will always be grateful for the time he encouraged us in a way that only he could when things were tough. Alan made everything all right again. They’re that kind of people. Now in the 25th year since we left, we still exchange Christmas cards and we love to visit with them when we are back in Urbana.

Far into the retirement years, Alan and Barb are still very much in love. A few years ago when we were visiting at their house, we saw wonderful recent romantic photos they had made. They were almost like wedding pictures.

Alan and Barb have fun together and are good at checking things off their bucket list. This year they checked off something on Alan’s list, seeing a total solar eclipse. Their Christmas letter told of their driving down to southern Illinois this past August. So many other people had that same idea that the three-hour drive took eight on the return trip.

This year’s letter included this beautiful photo.

God's doing.
God’s doing.

Alan put a sticker on the back that read: “NOT QUITE the Star of the EAST but it is our sun in full eclipse . . . taken on my cell phone! God’s doing.”

He’s right. The eclipse and the once-in-a-lifetime result on a cell phone camera were God’s doing. Alan, the retired pharmacist, has the faith, wisdom, and gumption to give credit where credit is due.

The heavens are telling of the glory of God;
And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.
Day to day pours forth speech,
And night to night reveals knowledge.
Psalm 19:1-2
