Debate, Prayer, and the Power of God

I signed up for one — just one — political email list and now my inbox is flooded with emails from various groups. Notgrass History never shares our email lists with anybody, but that certainly isn’t true of everybody! Whew!

The other day I got a long survey. I scrolled down past question after question without answering any of them until I got to what I hoped I would find at the bottom — a space to say what I wanted to say. The organization wanted to know if I had any advice to give a certain political candidate before the last presidential political debate tonight.

I don’t need to tell you which campaign sent the survey because, if I had the opportunity to give advice to the other major candidate, I would say the same thing. I have changed the he or she and him or her so I don’t come across as endorsing either candidate.

This was the question:

Is there anything ______ has not done during the first two debates that he/she absolutely must do during this final debate?

This was my answer:

I have been praying for several weeks that ______  will humble himself/herself and become a completely devoted follower of Jesus. I would love for ______  to do that and to reveal that humbly in the next debate and to show by his/her conduct and demeanor and attitude that that has happened — and to work to prove it every moment until election day. I believe that could make a profound impact on the course of our whole country. President Eisenhower made a commitment to God during his campaign, though he didn’t make it public until after he became president because he didn’t want to politicize it. I would like for ______ to be so transformed by Jesus that he/she does make it public and that it shows all the time every day. I will continue to pray for this.

If you have been reading Daily Encouragement for a while, you know that I have been praying for this for both candidates and that my friend Jo and her husband have been praying that in the upcoming election Christians will reveal to America the power of God. Will you join with us again in praying for these outcomes today?

May all our leaders be like King Josiah. This is what God said to him:

“Because your heart was tender and you humbled yourself before God when you heard His words against this place and against its inhabitants, and because you humbled yourself before Me, tore your clothes and wept before Me, I truly have heard you,” declares the Lord.
2 Chronicles 34:27

God is indeed our great and sovereign King.

For the kingdom is the Lord’s
And He rules over the nations.
Psalm 22:28
