Dignified

We went back to Titus 2:1-8 in ladies Bible class on Wednesday morning. This time, instead of sharing about women who had a godly impact on us, we concentrated on one word repeated in the instructions for both older men and younger men: dignified.

As the ladies defined what dignified looked like in young men and later thought about dignified older men they had known, I made a list of their definitions.

As you train the boys growing up to be young men in your home and train your daughters in what traits to look for in a young man they want to be married to for the rest of their lives, you may find this list to be helpful. It is the combined wisdom of women who have served God for many decades. I believe it is a treasure.

He is polite.

He is respectful, especially to older men and women and to children.

He is neat.

He is well-behaved.

He is kind.

He is considerate.

He is well-mannered.

He has a clean mouth.

He watches what he says.

He is helpful.

He is careful not to hurt people’s feelings.

Oswego, New York. Oswego high school boy who made seventy model planes for the Navy, and was awarded honorary rank of Admiral
In June 1943, this dignified teenage boy from Oswego, New York, made seventy model planes for the Navy and was awarded honorary rank of Admiral.

When folks around us talk about the boys they know, they might make statements like these: He sure is smart. What a handsome young man! You should see him play soccer (or baseball or basketball or . . .). Those aren’t bad statements. It is great to see boys and young men who exhibit those traits, but none of those came up when the ladies defined a dignified young man. The ones they did think of are beautifully consistent with what Paul taught Titus:

Likewise urge the young men to be sensible;
in all things show yourself
to be an example of good deeds,
with purity in doctrine, dignified,
sound in speech which is beyond reproach,
so that the opponent will be put to shame,
having nothing bad to say about us.
