Be good.

A few years ago, one of our precious friends went home to be with the Lord. Helen fell in the middle of the night. Her injuries would soon take her life, but God gave her a few days to live in hospice at the home of her daughter. She spent those last few days saying words that blessed her husband and children.

Helen’s last words were to her son, Dodd. She said, “Dodd, be good.”

Homeschooling mamas have many lessons to teach their children. Among them must be the final lesson that Helen gave to her son, who was already living an exemplary life at that time and has continued to live that kind of life since his mother passed away. I’m positive that she had taught him that same lesson since he was a little boy.

He who walks in his uprightness fears the Lord,
But he who is devious in his ways despises Him.
Proverbs 14:2

For the Lord is righteous, He loves righteousness;
The upright will behold His face.
Psalm 11:7

Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers
to abstain from fleshly lusts
which wage war against the soul.
Keep your behavior excellent among the Gentiles,
so that in the thing
in which they slander you as evildoers,
they may because of your good deeds,
as they observe them,
glorify God in the day of visitation.
1 Peter 2:11-12
