Every day my Aunt Dot forwards a short devotional to Ray, our children, and me. On many mornings, I hear a ding on my phone while I am putting on my makeup. When I check it, I see that it is my devotional from my Aunt Dot. Dot’s Dings are a happy part of my morning.

I appreciate these daily reminders that God loves me, that Dot loves me, and that Dot is a faithful follower of Jesus faithfully encouraging my family— and the many others she sends them to—to be faithful, too. One of the first books I ever received was a book about Jesus from my Aunt Dot. She has been encouraging me to be faithful for a long time.

Cuddled up with my Aunt Dot and Uncle Preston when I was a very little girl.

At the beginning of 2 Peter, the beloved apostle writes about grace and peace, the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. He speaks of God’s precious and magnificent promises. Peter loves these people who have “received a faith of the same kind as ours, [by the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ” so much that he tells them:

Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence,
in your faith supply moral excellence,
and in your moral excellence, knowledge,
and in your knowledge, self-control,
and in your self-control, perseverance,
and in your perseverance, godliness,
and in your godliness, brotherly kindness,
and in your brotherly kindness, love.
2 Peter 1:5-7

Like Peter, Dot is faithful to remind us of what is most important. So many of the life instructions that we give to our children are ones we have told them over and over again. Still we love them enough to remind them over and over again.

Therefore, I will always be ready to remind you of these things,
even though you already know them,
and have been established in the truth which is present with you.
2 Peter 1:12
