“Delicious Tastes” and “Joyful Memories”

When I was a little girl, Sunday School started at 10:00 a.m. and church at 11:00. Sometimes Daddy would get a hankering for Krispy KremeĀ® doughnuts on Sunday morning, so Mother would get us all decked out in our Sunday best early. Then Daddy would drive us to Nashville to the Krispy KremeĀ®, a trip of 25 miles.

As we sat on stools at the counter, Mother and Daddy enjoying doughnuts and coffee while Steve and I had doughnuts and milk, we watched circles of dough travel up and down and up and down in the “riser,” then fall into the grease, where they floated toward the conveyor belt, becoming golden doughnuts, before riding under their glaze shower.

After our treat, Daddy drove us back to Ashland City. We parked in our driveway, crossed the street, and walked into church in plenty of time for Sunday School.

While we were in Richmond for the Virginia homeschool convention last weekĀ with Bethany, Gregory, and Eva, we drove past Krispy KremeĀ® each night on our way to supper. You should have seen the line of cars on Friday night when Krispy KremeĀ® was offering one free doughnut to every customer in honor of National Doughnut Day.

This time it was Gregory who had a hankering for a doughnut. We didn’t wait in line for a free doughnut, but decided to go by yesterday morning on our way out of town.

A common sight in businesses these days are statements of a company’s vision and mission. As we entered the foyer yesterday, I read these for Krispy KremeĀ®.

Mission: To touch and enhance lives through the joy that is Krispy KremeĀ®

Vision: To be the worldwide leader in sharing delicious tastes and joyful memories

I was amused when I read them, thinking they were a bit overstated for a business that sold doughnuts. As IĀ watched circles of dough travel up and down and up and down in the “riser”. . .

. . . and, as I walked to the glass case to choose my doughnut–chocolate iced glazed–and, as I enjoyed the company of my husband, daughter, son-in-law, and little Eva, and, as I thought about it being Sunday morning, I was surprised by grief and joy. Tears welled up in my eyes. Oh, did I miss my Daddy! But that wasn’t all. I also basked in the joy of past Sunday mornings and of the one I was living.

On Sunday morning, Krispy KremeĀ® lived up to their mission and vision. Krispy KremeĀ® touched and enhanced my life through the joy that is Krispy KremeĀ®.

Our next stop was Whole Foods. As we drove down the Interstate, Ray and I enjoyed a bottle of kombucha with the “delicious tastes” of our Krispy KremeĀ® doughnuts. All day long, I remembered “joyful memories.”

I’m thankful that I had a daddy who loved to have fun. Don’t get so busy that you forget to make joyful memories.

They shall eagerly utter the memory of Your abundant goodness
And will shout joyfully of Your righteousness.
Psalm 145:7

  1. My Daddy used to take my sister and me out for a doughnut before church too! It’s such a sweet and special memory. šŸ™‚ We’re actually leaving on Tuesday to drive up to SC to see him for a few days. Maybe we’ll take him out to Krispy Kreme one morning, just for old time’s sake. Your posts are always a happy part of my morning. Have a blessed day!

  2. I had to laugh at the contradiction! Krispy Kreme donuts and kombucha! We are most definitely kindred spirits. Thank you for my morning smile… And my own memories of Saturday morning treats with my own dad.
