Education Begins and Ends with God

It happened again. Josh in customer service got a request from a homeschooling mama:

Could your company publish your curriculum in a secular version? We like the quality but we can’t use our state curriculum funds to purchase it because it has religious content, and besides that, some people want to use secular material.

The answer is a humble no. For one thing, we have no desire to produce secular curriculum. We are Christians. We do what we do on purpose. We couldn’t look at ourselves in the mirror if we took the Christian content out of our curriculum.

For another thing, we can’t write secular curriculum. It’s impossible. We publish history. History didn’t happen without God, so we can’t leave Him out.

Education imparts knowledge, and the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. The best education teaches children to love learning.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge;
Fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Proverbs 1:7

All knowledge is connected to God, and He has given everything we need.

Grace and peace be multiplied to you
in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord,
for His divine power has granted to us
everything pertaining to life and godliness,
through the true knowledge of Him
who called us by His own glory and excellence.
2 Peter 1:2-3

History begins when God created the universe.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Genesis 1:1

A course in world history should include stories about people and events around the world. According to Acts 17, God determined when people live in history.

. . . and He made from one man
every nation of mankind
to live on all the face of the earth,
having determined their appointed times
and the boundaries of their habitation . . .
Acts 17:26

God made the people who make history and the places where we live it. We people “do” history with the stuff God made for us. We couldn’t take Him out if we tried.

For since the creation of the world
His invisible attributes,
that is, His eternal power and divine nature,
have been clearly perceived,
being understood by what has been made,
so that they are without excuse.
Romans 1:20

Thank you for centering your homeschooling on God. Thank you for teaching your children’s hearts, souls, and minds. Don’t believe for a minute that anyone can teach a mind only. We humans have hearts, souls, and minds, and we simply cannot be divided up. God didn’t make us that way.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart
And do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He will make your paths straight.
Do not be wise in your own eyes;
Fear the Lord and turn away from evil.
Proverbs 3:5-7

Every person who has ever lived has been tempted to sin. Only Jesus always said no to those temptations (Hebrews 4:15). Please continue to protect your children from the pull of the world. Please don’t let anyone entice you to secularize their education.

Therefore I urge you, brothers and sisters,
by the mercies of God,
to present your bodies as a living and holy sacrifice,
acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.
And do not be conformed to this world,
but be transformed by the renewing of your mind,
so that you may prove what the will of God is,
that which is good and acceptable and perfect.
Romans 12:1-2
