From Frenzied Highway to Quiet Country Drive

Ray and I deeply appreciate your prayers for him and for me. He is not undergoing surgery this morning after all. The pulmonologist that he saw last Thursday wants to do another test before a decision is made on the type of surgery is best for Ray to have. That test is on May 1. We appreciate your continued prayers. At first the delay of another three weeks made me sad, but then I realized that we have three more weeks to pray. I am content with that.

The weather was rainy, and the Interstate was super busy when we started home on that Thursday before Easter weekend. After one car pulled too close in front of me from an entrance ramp and another car soon pulled unexpectedly into a left lane I was trying to enter, I told Ray I wanted to go home on calmer backroads. He didn’t mind.

We quickly exchanged a harrowing ride on four or five busy lanes for a quiet ride in the country. Ah, what a pleasant change. Birds were tweeting a beautiful and exciting song when we stopped for me to take photos of this emerald scene.

And now, for a closer view of that immaculate farm . . .

As we continued on the two-lane highway, we saw a sign that read: “Watertown Next Six Exits.” It was hilarious. There were no exits and no Interstate, only a town with a sense of humor.

We turned off the highway, crossed the railroad track that ran alongside it, and took a peek at downtown Watertown. A tiny central business district surrounded a lawn with a gazebo. Unlike many rural towns, the buildings downtown had businesses inside.

I especially liked the look of this old-fashioned barber shop with a real old-fashioned barber pole.

You could tell from the attention to details that Watertown is home to people who care.

Homeschooling is a great way to get off the frenzied “highway” and onto a quiet one. Though one day, your homeschool may become a frenzied “highway.” When that happens, remember to get off and travel on a “quiet highway” at least for a while.

When Paul penned the first letter to the Christians in Corinth, Greece, he wrote about the way Christians are to conduct themselves when the church assembles together. That is the context in the following passage, but I believe it applies to our frenzied lives, too.

. . . for God is not a God of confusion
but of peace . . .
1 Corinthians 14:33
