From Sunday to Sunday

On Sunday, March 13, 1932,  my great-grandmother Ollie Elliott, who was a midwife, attended her eldest daughter, Lorene Elliott Farmer, in the birth of her firstborns, twin girls. While Ollie, Lorene, and other female relatives were inside the house, male relatives waited outside. Perhaps the reason those male relatives could be gathered outside was that it was Sunday, their day of rest.

One of those twin girls was my mother, Ollie Evelyn Farmer Boyd. I first heard the details of that day about six years ago at a family gathering. My mother’s first cousin John Russell Peck told me, “I remember the day your mother was born.” John Russell was a little boy of about eight years old when he stayed outside with the men and waited for his grandmother Ollie to assist his Aunt Lorene in her first birth.

Mother was in her early 80s when John Russell told me that story and I thought how wonderful it was to talk to someone who remembered the day she was born.

Mother, John Russell, his wife Avanell, and me

This is my mother, Evelyn, when she was a girl.

When she graduated from high school,

On the day she married Daddy,

With her first baby, me,

With Daddy, my brother Steve, and me,

With her grandchildren and my daddy,

Just before hers and Daddy’s 50th wedding anniversary,

And ready for Bible class on January 22, 2020.

Mother breathed her first breath on a Sunday in 1932. She breathed her last breath on a Sunday in 2020. Last night my mother went to be with Jesus. She was almost 88 years old.

Her children rise up and bless her . . .
Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain,
But a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.
Proverbs 31:28a, 30
