God’s Protection

In the last few days, I have been writing and reading about the 1960s. It was quite depressing at first—the Cold War, the Bay of Pigs, the Cuban Missile Crisis, assassinations, the Vietnam War, riots . . . .

Then, I realized that the 1960s didn’t last forever. Many, many good things happened between the 1960s and the present, the fall of the Berlin Wall in particular.

One good thing about learning about the past is that we see that bad events don’t last forever and that good events have many times followed bad ones.

One of our grandchildren recently asked me who painted this rooster that hangs in our kitchen.

Mother’s Rooster

“Grandmother painted it,” I told him.

When I began writing this post for today, I thought about sharing a verse from Psalm 12 which I believe describes much of popular culture:

The wicked strut about on every side
When vileness is exalted among the sons of mankind.
Psalm 12:8

The “strutting about” part reminded me of Mother’s rooster and of the conversation with our grandchild.

We need to think about Psalm 12:8 when we consider what we allow to enter our hearts and minds and the hearts and minds of our children. We also need to remember the beauty and promise of the verses before it, which tell what God will do for godly people.

The words of the Lord are pure words;
Like silver refined in a furnace on the ground, filtered seven times.
You, Lord, will keep them;
You will protect him from this generation forever.
Psalm 12:6-7

  1. That rooster painting is beautiful! I love that you have it framed and hanging in your house to honor your mother. And I love the Biblical application!
