Helen’s Mama Treated Her Family Like Company

I miss Helen, a sweet sister in Christ who passed away several months ago. Several years ago, in our Wednesday ladies’ Bible class, Helen shared a memory of her mother. With a beautiful smile and with emotion, Helen said that, though her mother cared daily for a family of ten children, at holiday-time she created a beautiful table with a starched white tablecloth and her best dishes. On that table, she placed her delicious homecooked meal.

As you make your own (usually exhausting) preparations for Thanksgiving or as you make your (usually exhausting) preparations to travel for Thanksgiving, remember that your hard work is teaching each of your children that he or she is important and that family is important. Family is God’s idea. When you honor your family, you honor Him.

How wonderful it was for Helen and her father and siblings to know that they were important enough for their mother to treat them like company.

But we proved to be gentle among you,
as a nursing mother
tenderly cares for her own children.
1 Thessalonians 2:7
