Heroes and Heroines
As I mentioned to you last week, Ray and I spent last Thursday through Saturday at a homeschool convention in Ft. Worth. Ray and I took a turn in our new photo op spot where children (and their parents) can get their picture made in the famous American Gothic painting — touched up a bit with customization for Notgrass History!
On Sunday, we stopped for a visit to the Abilene Zoo . . .
. . . before heading west to Odessa and Midland (where President George W. Bush and his father President George H.W. Bush once lived) and to Andrews, where we spoke to a group of homeschoolers yesterday morning before heading back east to speak to another group of homeschoolers in San Angelo last night.
I’ve met lots of heroes and heroines since we got to Texas. In fact, if I went looking for heroes and heroines, one of the first stops I would make would be someplace where homeschooling mamas and daddies are gathered.
I’d like to share two hero and heroine stories with you today. As I often do, I’m making up their names.
Robert and Janie came by our booth with their daughter and son. They were home for a visit from the small Pacific island nation where they live. Robert and Janie moved to this island nation as self-supporting missionaries so they could help the people there. The reason they can be self-supporting is that Robert is a disabled veteran and therefore receives a pension. He served our country. Now he and his wife are serving these islanders together.
Susan is a single mom who homeschools her four boys, ages 8 and up. Susan has been a single mom since her youngest son was two years old. That’s when her husband died in Afghanistan. Her husband gave the ultimate sacrifice to his country. Now Susan sacrifices to homeschool her children.
These folks are heroes and heroines.
So are you. I appreciate so much what you do every day to overcome obstacles and to keep on keeping on for the sake of your children. Thank you.
Whoever speaks, is to do so as one
who is speaking the utterances of God;
whoever serves is to do so as one
who is serving by the strength which God supplies;
so that in all things God may be glorified
through Jesus Christ, to whom belongs
the glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
