Hmmm…What should I wear today?
Hmmm . . .
“What should I wear today?”
“What should I pack for this trip?”
“Is that pink top hanging on the drying rack or is it still in the hamper?
Clothes, clothes, clothes. They wear out. They get stained. They shrink. Kids outgrow them. We outgrow them.
Sometimes I think, “If anyone asks me, ‘What do you do?’, I’m going to answer, ‘Laundry.'” I imagine you can identify with that!
Yesterday I sat with Miss Johnnie Faye, looking through old photographs she has shared with us to illustrate our Hometown History videos. Click here to see Miss Johnnie Faye talk about how her family got water from a creek.
One of the fun experiences of the afternoon was seeing fashions of the early to mid-20th century. These are Miss Johnnie Faye’s grandparents. She said that she almost always saw her grandmother like this, wearing a print dress and an apron.
This is Miss Johnnie Faye herself when she was fourteen, wearing a pretty yellow blouse and a cream, gray, and yellow plaid skirt she made herself. This photo is from around 1953.
These last photos are of Sallie, one of Miss Johnnie Faye’s sisters. Sallie moved to California just before she got married. She is now 95 years old, a widow, and still living in California. She and Miss Johnnie Faye talk often on the phone. Sallie made her own clothes. Her husband was obviously very proud of her because the photo collection included many pretty pictures of her. Let me show you a few . . . .
In a print . . .
In a pretty velvet . . .
In fashionable black . . .
And with her husband . . .
This last photo shows Sallie in a maternity outfit. I don’t remember seeing an expectant mother in any other type of clothing when I was a girl. Everyone I remember wore a blouse and a skirt. The blouses varied in style, but the skirts were constant. My mother’s younger sister Lavon lived with our family while her husband was serving overseas in the military. She had my cousin Roger while she was living with us, so I got the inside scoop on those skirts. In the front was a large, belly-sized, U-shaped cutout with two straps. One strap crossed across the waist from one side of the top of the U to the other; the other strap extended from the waist strap to the bottom of the U. Notice that the tops were not very long. They weren’t as long as I would have liked them to be if I were wearing a skirt with a big U cutout surrounding my belly! Still, Sallie looks like a beautiful picture with the black hat, black pumps, and white gloves completing her ensemble.
That’s our fashion show for today. It brought smiles to my face and I hope it does to the same for you.
Vastly more important than what we put on ourselves is what God puts on us.
I will rejoice greatly in the Lord,
My soul will exult in my God;
For He has clothed me with garments of salvation,
He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness,
As a bridegroom decks himself with a garland,
And as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
Isaiah 61:10
Thank you for the lovely fashion show!
(And the words of wisdom at the conclusion)
