Homeschool: Better Than a Harvard Education
President Teddy Roosevelt grew up in an amazing homeschooling family. If his father, Theodore Roosevelt Sr., were alive today, homeschool event planners would be clamoring to schedule him as a keynote speaker.
The elder Roosevelt encouraged his children’s interests. He treated them each as unique individuals and tailored each child’s training to his or her personal needs.
Theodore Roosevelt Sr. led his family on amazing field trips. He was devoutly Christian, leading his children in devotions at home and giving them a powerful example of service to others. The Roosevelt children adored their father and mother. The entire family was deeply devoted to one another.
Theodore Roosevelt graduated from Harvard University when he was twenty-one years old. According to David McCullough in his 1981 biography of Roosevelt’s formative years, Mornings On Horseback, p. 213, this is how Roosevelt compared his experiences at home and at Harvard:
“He thought what he had learned at Harvard of considerably less value than what he had learned at home.”
So, “Homeschool: Better Than a Harvard Education”? That’s what Teddy Roosevelt thought. Good job, Mama!
Hear, my son, your father’s instruction
And do not forsake your mother’s teaching;
Indeed, they are a graceful wreath to your head
And ornaments about your neck.
