Homeschooling That Lasts

Mary Evelyn’s homeschool project during her junior year of homeschool high school became a 27-year blessing to her mama. On September 17-19, we celebrated the 27th year of the Homeschool Dramatic Society and our 20th year at the Cookeville Performing Arts Center with six performances of Patriots! A Play About Courage in the American Revolution.

Each year Mary Evelyn and I try to remember to take a picture of the magnificent author, director, producer, and choreographer of that year’s grand endeavor and her assistant director. Here are two from 2015 and 2016 and others from ten years later respectively. I’ve also included one scene from the 2015, 2016, and 2025 productions and several from this year.

Touched by the King
Capernaum, Israel, First Century AD, 2015

Street Robber
George Muller and His Work Among Orphans in England in the Mid-1800s, 2016

Westward, Ho!
A Story of the Oregon Trail, 2025

Patriots!
A Play About Courage in the American Revolution, 2026

Working on a play together every year except during the COVID 19 pandemic is certainly a dramatic way to carry homeschooling far into the future (pardon the pun!). However, no matter what path your child takes after their formal homeschooling is completed, the impact of what you and your children are doing together now will remain with all of you for the rest of your lives. Enjoy it to the fullest. Each day is precious, and each year is precious.

Therefore, my beloved brethren,
be steadfast, immovable, always abounding
in the work of the Lord,
knowing that your toil
is not in vain in the Lord.
1 Corinthians 15:58

If you would like to watch a recording of one of Mary Evelyn’s plays, you can find links to several of them here. Note that the sound quality of the recordings has gotten better through the years.
