Homeschooling in the Backyard

Yesterday morning Ray came to get me in the office so I could see the rafter of turkeys out the kitchen window. Of course, I grabbed my camera.

I counted two adults and one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight turkey babies . . . no, nine — one came out from behind a tree. They hung around the fencerow between our yard and the hay field next door. They went into the overgrown fencerow and came back out again, turning around and sauntering along in the direction of the pond.

Ray said, “Maybe they’re homeschooling.” I said, “That’s exactly what they’re doing.”

Following mama.

Exploring.

Finding out what to do when danger is near.

Finding yummy morsels.

Learning to stick together.

I hope you have fun with your jakes and jennies today.

I know every bird of the mountains,
And everything that moves in the field is Mine.
Psalm 50:11

  1. What a fun sight! Yes, it’s those simple lessons and goals that are so important in the long run. Thanks for a simply refreshing thought this morning. I needed it as I again go through all the good, but brain-taxing options available to us for this coming school year. I want to be a good mama hen to my jakes. I appreciate your prayers for the Lord to lead my decision-making this morning.
