Honoring Debby

I’d like to introduce you to my cousin Debby. Here she and I are in my family’s backyard many decades ago.

Me, our Chihuahua Spicy, and my cousin Debby

Debby’s mama is my mama’s younger sister, Lavon. Lavon and Debby lived with our family while their husband and daddy, my Uncle Billy, served in the military. He was stationed in Japan. I remember well the excitement at our house when Lavon was rushed to the hospital in Nashville for the birth of their second child, my cousin Roger.

Debby is now a mama and grandmama. I am writing today to honor this precious cousin, whom I admire deeply. Her dad, my Uncle Billy, is the uncle I told you about several weeks ago. He was my fun-loving, active Uncle Billy who was bowling three times a week before contracting COVID. While he was in the hospital for several weeks, Debby faithfully served him in many ways, while continuing her full-time job. When he went into hospice, she and her husband welcomed him to their home where he died a few days later. Since then my Aunt Lavon, who is no longer able to care for herself, has moved in with them; Lavon was hospitalized briefly; and Debby and her husband have learned that his cancer has returned.

Through it all, Debby has continued her full-time work. While she admits to me how tired she gets physically, she always has a sweet and serving attitude. Her faith in God is always strong. She is a praying woman.

Debby is an inspiration to me. I am introducing you to her today so she can be an inspiration to you, too.
