Honoring Generations

I recently shared this photo of Ray’s dad with you.

Oh, I loved and respected Ray’s dad. What a fine human being — and fun and funny, too.

A few years ago, I saw an advertisement showing young women drinking, laughing, and having a grand time.

“Thank you for not drinking . . . and not smoking,” I said to Ray.

“I don’t want to, one,” Ray replied. After a pause, he continued, “Two, I would shame my daddy.”

Some people I love very much smoke and drink, but it’s something Ray and I have decided to stay away from. One of my great-grandfathers died at fifty years old, as a result of his years of alcoholism. Those were two habits Ray’s daddy avoided, too. A buddy bet Ray’s daddy when he entered the Army a few months before Pearl Harbor that he would pick up both habits while he was in the service. He didn’t. Ray doesn’t want to either.

As I have told Ray many times, I wasn’t smart enough to pick him out for a husband. He is one of the many ways God has shown grace to me. I’m thankful for a husband who obeys:

 Honor your father and mother
(which is the first commandment with a promise),
so that it may be well with you,
and that you may live long on the earth.
Ephesians 6:2-3

I’m also thankful for a son who honors the memory of his grandfather. For many years, John has presented “One Soldier’s Story,” the story of Wes’ experiences in World War II. John plans to present it at 10:30 a.m. Central time tomorrow, Wednesday, April 22. I love the memories of every time I have seen John do this, especially the time he did it at our home for Ray’s nephew Chris who is now a colonel. Granddaddy Wes was watching, too.

I hope you can join us.

Here’s the link to sign up. You can watch it live or watch it later. After you sign up, check your email inbox for a link to the presentation.

The wise will inherit honor,
But fools display dishonor.
Proverbs 3:35
