Honoring His Father and Mother

While we were in the Mount Rushmore area in October, we visited the beautiful Chapel in the Hills, an exact replica of the Borgund stavkirke, a church in Laerdal, Norway, built around 1150.

Arndt E. Dahl provided the land, the landscaping, and the chapel in honor of his father (a pioneer Lutheran minister in the Upper Midwest) and his mother. He asked that the chapel be dedicated to the glory of God.

The Norwegian Department of Antiquities allowed a local construction company to use blueprints of the Borgund church.

Norwegian woodcarver Erik Fridstrom and local resident Helge Christiansen created the woodcarvings.

On the grounds is an authentic storehouse called a “stabbur.” Craftsmen in Norway built the stabbur and shipped it to Rapid City where it was reassembled.

From the back you can see its grass roof.

Though no church meets regularly in the chapel, visitors attend services here in the summer and the chapel hosts many weddings and vow renewals.

The setting God created here is beautiful.

I even saw a turkey beyond this path.

Arndt E. Dahl is an example to us all.

Children, obey your parents in the Lord,
for this is right.
Honor your father and mother
(which is the first commandment with a promise),
so that it may be well with you,
and that you may live long on the earth.
Ephesians 6:1-3
