On Friday afternoon, Ray and I pulled the Christmas decorations out of the attic closet, put in one of our old favorite Christmas videotapes (I know they’re old-fashioned, but why buy a DVD when the old tape still works?), and began decorating the Christmas tree in our living room.

Ray dug and unwrapped and dug and unwrapped until he found Mr. and Mrs. Snowman because they always go on first.

The Mr. and Mrs. are two of about ten ornaments that have been on our tree every year since the first Christmas after we got married. I made them out of two L’eggs eggs — well, one and a half L’eggs eggs to be exact.

What is a L’eggs egg, you may wonder? The question prompts me to give you a short history of ladies leg apparel in the 1960s. When I quit wearing anklets or tights with my Sunday dresses when I was about ten years old, I started wearing flesh-colored hose. That’s what all ladies wore, except nurses in uniform, that is. Theirs were white.

These were not pantyhose, mind you. They were stockings which fastened onto the four hooks of a garter belt or, if you were a lady, to the inside of your girdle (we call girdles shape wear these days).

Pantyhose came later; and still later than that, came L’eggs, which were pantyhose packaged in a giant plastic egg we called L’eggs eggs. These L’eggs eggs quickly became craft inspirations and toys, too.

In the silly days when we wore thin nylon pantyhose that sometimes lasted for only one wear before they got a run (or runner, as it was called by older ladies), I went through lots of L’eggs eggs. Thus, these were an obvious source of decorations for our first very bare Christmas tree.

As usual, I digress. Let me get back to Friday. After Ray and I put the Mr. and Mrs. and a few other ornaments on the tree, I walked into the kitchen. As I walked, I could feel something flap flapping on the back of one of my legs. I reached back and felt an ornament. I had no idea how it got hooked onto my lace shirt extender!

Naturally I thought of you. Something like: “Here I go being ridiculous again! I’d better get a picture for a blog post.”

I asked Ray to take a picture. It wasn’t until I previewed his photo on my camera that I found out that I was decorated with not one flapping ornament, but two! And, strangely, both ornaments were hooked on backwards, revealing their undersides.

How did that happen? I have no clue — and, no, Ray doesn’t know either. Sometimes the things that happen to me are so bizarre I am afraid to tell you. Surely you will think I made it up or staged the whole thing, but I didn’t!

Sometimes we mamas carry around all kinds of things. Sometimes we know how they got there and sometimes, as in the case of my ornaments, we have no idea. If you are carrying around something that is much harder to carry than a flapping ornament (or two), something like fear or worry or feelings of guilt or sin, remember that Jesus stands ready to take care of it — all of it.

Therefore humble yourselves
under the mighty hand of God,
that He may exalt you at the proper time,
casting all your anxiety on Him,
because He cares for you.
1 Peter 5:6-7

  1. Cute!

I’m reading this as I’m fussing with myself about two “insanities,” you know those things that you keep doing over and over the same way but expecting a different result.

Thanks for sharing and adding a little humor in the process.

    Blessings
