I’m glad someone taught me.

God is great.
God is good.
Let us thank Him for our food.

It’s been more than 60 years since I learned those thirteen words in a schoolroom in Ashland City. Day after day we little children bowed our heads before lunchtime and repeated that prayer. They are a profound collection of words—so much truth in three short lines.

God is great.

For Your righteousness, O God, reaches to the heavens,
You who have done great things;
O God, who is like You?
Psalm 71:19

God is good

O taste and see that the Lord is good;
How blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!
Psalm 34:8

Let us thank Him for our food.

I have been young and now I am old,
Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken
Or his descendants begging bread.
All day long he is gracious and lends,
And his descendants are a blessing.
Psalm 37:25-26

I am thankful for what you are teaching your children day after day. I am thankful you are teaching them that God is great, that He is good, and that He is the source of all they need. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if everyone in the world knew what your children know? I certainly am thankful that someone taught me.

Blessed are You, O Lord;
Teach me Your statutes.
Psalm 119:12
