Knowing I Am Wonderfully Made

I don’t know if children have always had feelings of insecurity about their bodies, but I know that I did. I’m embarrassed to tell you all of the aspects of my body that worried me, but I will share the least embarrassing one: I thought my forehead was too high. I can tell you one thing for sure. If God allowed me go back and relive one year of my life, I would not choose age 12. What a hard time that is for so many girls—and for many boys, too.

Five girls, ages 12 and 13, accompany representatives of the International Association of Ice Cream Manufacturers who are presenting President Franklin Roosevelt a huge ice cream cake during Ice Cream Week, April 17, 1937. Courtesy Library of Congress.

I could hypothesize about the reasons that is true. I could ramble about whether it is harder for children to accept the way God made them now than it was when I was growing up in the 1960s or when those girls pictured above were growing up in the 1930s, but I won’t do that. I just want to bring up a subject that is hard for many children and very, very hard for some. Growing up in a loving homeschooling family doesn’t make children immune from their fears.

Three realities that we and our children desperately need to take into our hearts are these:

I am so valuable that Jesus died for me.

For God so loved the world,
that He gave His only begotten Son,
that whoever believes in Him
shall not perish, but have eternal life.
John 3:16

I am made in God’s image.

So God created man in His own image,
in the image of God He created him;
male and female He created them.
Genesis 1:27

God did a good job when He made me.

For You formed my inward parts;
You wove me in my mother’s womb.
I will give thanks to You,
for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Wonderful are Your works,
And my soul knows it very well.
My frame was not hidden from You,
When I was made in secret,
And skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth;
Your eyes have seen my unformed substance;
And in Your book were all written
The days that were ordained for me,
When as yet there was not one of them.
Psalm 139:13-16
