Lessons from a Cookbook

I recently culled through my cookbooks, searching for ones I wanted to toss out. One makes me chuckle. The subtitle is “Living the High-Carbohydrate Way.”

Wait a minute! High carbs? Isn’t everyone wanting low carbs? This thick, hardcover cookbook, that came to me used somewhere along the way, promises “over 350 recipes.” I certainly don’t need or want 350 high-carb recipes!

Ah, what goes around comes around, so we say. That cookbook’s 1985 wisdom sounds like foolishness 35 years later. But is it? Will we learn five years from now that we were all wrong with low carbs and we should have been eating high carbs all along? That author certainly thought so in 1985.

Popular wisdom certainly tosses us to and fro when it comes to how to eat. Praise God that we don’t have to be tossed around spiritually. Praise God that He has taught us exactly what to teach our children about the most important things. Praise God that His truth is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

As a result, we are no longer to be children,
tossed here and there by waves
and carried about by every wind of doctrine,
by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming;
but speaking the truth in love,
we are to grow up in all aspects into Him
who is the head, even Christ,
from whom the whole body,
being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies,
according to the proper working of each individual part,
causes the growth of the body
for the building up of itself in love.
Ephesians 4:14-16

Remember those who led you,
who spoke the word of God to you;
and considering the result of their conduct,
imitate their faith.
 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
Do not be carried away by varied and strange teachings . . .
Hebrews 13:7-9a

  1. Well said Charlene. Thanks for encouraging us with solid, biblical wisdom.
    Praise God for the Rock that is higher than I.
    What a sure foundation of truth is ours in Christ.
    He will be a refuge for us!!
