Lessons from a Watched Pot
Yesterday I went into the kitchen to boil some water in our clear glass electric water kettle. In a hurry to get back to the game of Nertz we were playing, I stood watching for the moment it came to a rolling boil so I could get back to the game.
In the process, I dispelled a myth I have heard for decades. “Watched pots never boil” isn’t true after all. I saw it happen with my very own eyes last night!
Not only did the water boil before my eyes, but it also taught me a lesson. God’s creation is astounding. Just think. I ran water from a faucet into my glass pot, put it on the base of the kettle, turned it on, and it started to boil. Okay, I know you have seen that happen again and again, just as I have, but last night I gazed in wonder.
Water is an astounding creation. Apply heat and it doesn’t just sit there anymore taking up space in a glass kettle. It starts moving around, bubbling up, and sending tiny water droplets upward.
Water has the most amazing qualities. It rises. It falls. It freezes. It expands. It contracts. It fits the shape of whatever it is in.
In fact, every creation has the most amazing qualities — including you and your children.
One generation shall praise Your works to another,
And shall declare Your mighty acts.
On the glorious splendor of Your majesty
And on Your wonderful works, I will meditate.
Psalm 145:4-5
Wonder in the ordinary. I was trying to explain this concept to my son the other day. Not sure he quite got it.
