Lessons from The Real World

One criticism of homeschooling is that children don’t spend time in the “real world.” I say, “Hogwash.” Wise homeschooling mamas live in the real world with their children every day. For one thing, spending days in a family with people of multiple ages is definitely the real world. But, there is so much more. Living and learning as a family provides opportunities for parents to teach their children:

  • How to handle disappointment.
  • How to handle anger.
  • How to forgive.
  • How to rejoice with others.
  • How to get along.
  • How to cooperate.

I have been immersed in world history for many months and I can tell you that time and again things would have been so much better for so many people if only people had learned how to do those six things and been willing to do them.

See that no one repays another with evil for evil,
but always seek after that which is good for one another and for all people.

  1. Agreed! I have noticed that most of our conversations that led to heart discussions were prompted during history studies. Undoubtedly, it is the reason that our three girls would say that history was their favorite subject. The material can prompt lots of reflection on current events and, even more, events that they foresee coming along in their adulthood.
