Little Acts of Kindness

I hope you are enjoying a Merry Christmas season. It seems to me that store clerks I have encountered this year have issued even more Christmas greetings than usual.

I have made several trips to Hobby Lobby over the last few weeks and have found it bustling with shoppers. The clerks must be tired, but they have still been friendly.

One day when I was there, I noticed glitter on the floor in the ladies restroom, which is on the opposite side of the store from the main aisles of Christmas decorations. During one shopping trip, I mentioned to the lady checking me out that she must be covered with glitter at the end of the day. She told me that when she takes a bath, she has to clean the tub afterward because there is a ring of glitter. She was cheerful and uncomplaining, though, when she told me.

Ray and I were blessed recently by a young Kroger grocery store employee, who was especially kind to us while we were on a trip out of town. He seemed possibly to have some kind of developmental delay. He was working with shopping carts by the front door when he saw me leaving. “You have a blessed day,” he said, “and make it home safely.”

Ray had dropped me off at the door. When he drove up to pick me up, the young man helped me with my door and told us both, “Happy Holidays.”

We have so many opportunities to bless others. I’m thankful for the people who take those opportunities.

The babe born in Bethlehem blessed us all by dying for us. While He was here, He taught us to do good to others. He taught us by His example and by His words. He showed us by word and example to let our light shine. Sometimes we shine best with little acts of kindness.

One time He taught about the reward of doing a little act of kindness as simple as giving a cup of cold water.

“. . . whoever in the name of a disciple
gives to one of these little ones
even a cup of cold water to drink,
truly I say to you, he shall not lose his reward.”
Matthew 10:40-42
