Might as well be playful!

Ray and I often hold hands when we are walking. For years I’ve grabbed Ray’s hand and said playfully, “Might as well hold hands.”

I know there are many times in my life when there is some positive thing I “might as well” do, but I am so wrapped up in some to do list or concern or other preoccupation that I simply don’t think about it. I think I’ll coin a new phrase to help me remember, something like “might as well laugh” or “might as well be funny” or “might as well be playful.” Some people are so good at being playful. It’s a helpful trait. After all:

A joyful heart makes a cheerful face,
But when the heart is sad, the spirit is broken.
Proverbs 15:13

It has been video week around here. We have moved our versatile team member Titus from shipping to video production, and we have been giving him a workout. He has filmed ten videos already this week with more to do today. I plan to share these with you when we release them. I’d love your feedback.

As we were writing scripts this week, I thought of how fun it would be to include photos of the cowboy group Riders in the Sky in one of the videos (you’ll understand when you see it). Ray and I saw them in concert several years ago in Cumberland Caverns, which has a cool (literally and figuratively) underground concert venue. After the concert, the members of the group visited with members of the audience and posed for pictures.

At the time I was working on the last unit of America the Beautiful, which includes one lesson on the history of American music and another on Music City, USA and the Ryman Auditorium. I got up my courage and asked one of the cowboys if I could include a photo of the group in the curriculum. They sweetly agreed.

I went to the Riders in the Sky website early this week and wrote to each of the email addresses I thought might get to the right department. To Ray’s and my delight, the first email we saw yesterday morning was this appropriate reply from the singing cowboys:

Howdy Charlene,

Mighty fine and a big western thanks for asking.
I say go ahead and use the photographs as you see fit, and I hope our trails cross again on down this long and winding trail.

Best from the West,
Too Slim

I was thrilled. Isn’t that fun? Might as well be playful, right? Well, if I’m going to be playful, I guess I’ll show this old photo we took that day. It’s not the one we put in America the Beautiful. That one includes only the singing cowboys.

I'm the one in the middle without a hat.
Too Slim is to Ray’s left. I’m the one in the middle without a hat.

Happy trails, Cowgirls. Hope you find some time to be playful this weekend and enjoy a continual feast.

All the days of the afflicted are bad,
But a cheerful heart has a continual feast.
Proverbs 15:15
