More About Hearts and Husbands

Several days ago I thought about writing to you about Proverbs 31. When I glanced through the verses one day in preparation, the one I used yesterday caught my attention.

The heart of her husband trusts in her.
Proverbs 31:11

One of the first things that popped into my head was the song, “I Only Have Eyes for You.” Ray and I were on the road to and from Nashville that day, so I looked up the song on my phone and found that the Flamingos sang it in 1959. I don’t know anything else about the Flamingos, but I do think their hit song from the 1950s has an important message.

“I only have eyes for you” — now there’s marriage advice for you. That’s something to say with our lips and our hearts.

One of the most popular book genres for women is the romance novel.

For some reason, I remember that the Dean Martin Show came on every Thursday night when I was a young teen. An older married woman I knew loved the Dean Martin Show because she really liked Dean Martin.

Way back in the 1970s, a handsome actor named Robert Redford began making women swoon. In the 80s, a Jello®, Cool Whip®, and cream cheese dessert called “Not Quite Robert Redford” was making the rounds of the church potluck. When I looked the recipe up on the Internet to find out what was in it, it was called “Better Than Robert Redford” (much to my surprise, I also found out that he turned 79 years old yesterday.)

Romance novels, the Dean Martin Show, the inspiration for “Not Quite Robert Redford,” and whoever the newest heart throb is have one thing in common — they each have the potential to take a little piece of a woman’s heart away from the man who trusts in her.

So can the preacher who is such a good listener or the handsome man who teaches a Sunday School class.

I decided not to bother Ray with another set-the-timer-and-run photo session last night when I wrote this. Just this week, we were looking through some photos from another set-the-timer-and run photo session we did a couple of years ago when we needed a speaker photo. Here’s one with my hair flying . . .

. . . and here’s one with me flying (and, no, this fancy edifice is not our house!).

I beg you to protect your marriage — and therefore your children — by guarding your eyes and your heart so you can say this about your husband every day: “I only have eyes for you.”

Watch over your heart with all diligence,
For from it flow the springs of life.
Proverbs 4:23

  1. amen amen amen!!!! I had a young woman working with me (she got fired last week) I tried to tell her this. She would not listen. She is in a downward spiral. She however was not married, had 2 children and has lived with the childrens father for 7 years. How sad life is without Jesus Christ, and the most important other than Jesus is how you hold in esteem your partner. Thank you for a good word today.

  2. Such an important reminder! I have a young married friend who often brags on social media about her “celebrity crushes.” She has even called certain ones her “# 1”. I can’t help but wonder how that makes her husband feel.
