Our house has lots of old stuff and some new stuff that will be old stuff some day unless Jesus comes back first. Why do I keep old stuff? Many things I keep because of the people connected with them. I’ll play “I spy” for a moment here at my desk. What do I see without leaving my chair? I spy:

  • A photo of Ray and me.
  • A portrait of John, Bethany, and Mary Evelyn when they were little.
  • Photos of my grandchildren–naturally.
  • A letter from John.
  • A small lamp that belonged to Ray’s mother.
  • The rock that my mother had hand-painted with a portrait of Spicey, the chihuahua we had when I was in junior high.
  • The sampler that I assigned to Bethany as one of her home school graduation requirements.
  • A rose that Mary Evelyn drew in the art class the children and I took together over fifteen years ago.
  • A picture I took of Daddy on the front porch of our house just weeks before he died.
  • A quilt my grandmother pieced and her mother quilted.

When we moved into this old house almost ten years ago, Ray said this is where our stuff was always supposed to be. Do your children know about the people behind the old and new stuff at your house? Maybe you can be your children’s tour guide today as you take them on an historic field trip right there in your home. It’s just one more way to teach your children that they and other people are valuable.

Beloved, let us love one another,
for love is from God;
and everyone who loves
is born of God and knows God.
1 John 4:7, NASB

  1. Your house reminds me of mine and my moms too. We both enjoy antiques and cherished family treasures. We just bought a 70 year old English Tudor style home. It is something that I’ve always wanted if I couldn’t live in the country. I love the character of an older home and my family pieces and collectible a fit right in. Thanks for sharing your ideas. I know that since my parents valued their family treasures, we’ve done the sane thing too. Just the other day I aired out some of my Mawmaw’s quilts on the line. It was special to think I had them and I sit there looking at the fabrics used and wondered who use to wear what? That’s fun!

  2. My mother and I were just doing this the other day! I love hearing the stories about where all her “pretties” came from. =)
