One Blessing Was Enough

Ray and I made our usual rounds from table to table at Helen’s Restaurant on Sunday. Ray wondered recently if folks might think he is running for office or something. Anyone who knows Ray knows that, as wonderful as he would be in public office, he would never act like a vote-getting politician in the stereotypical view. We both enjoy meeting and greeting the folks at Helen’s. It’s as simple as that. As our son-in-law said the other night, it feels like a family reunion.

When we got back to our table on Sunday, a young woman I didn’t know came over with her daughter. “She uses your curriculum,” the mother said, “and wanted to meet you.” Almost no greeting besides one from my very own children or grandchildren can excite me more than a greeting like that. I was thrilled to meet the beautiful little girl. Her mother said that she is using From Adam to Us. I asked the girl if she is enjoying it. She told me how much she enjoys the pictures. Her face beamed when I told her that I had put those pictures in the book. This little girl was a picture herself in her dressy red dress, pearl necklace, shoulder-length brunette hair, and sweet smile.

As it turned out, though I had never met this girl’s immediate family, I know the little girl’s grandparents. Naturally, this is Gainesboro, after all, where it feels that almost everyone is related.

And speaking of grandparents, I had one other especially wonderful moment at Helen’s on Sunday. We almost always see a lady I will call Linda. Her health has long been troublesome. She doesn’t bring it up herself, but I often check on how she is doing when we run into each other. When I stopped by to chat with a table full of ladies I know on Sunday, Linda had come over to visit them, too. “How are you?” I asked her. She smiled and said, “My grandbaby was at church today.”

That was all that Linda needed on Sunday. That one blessing was enough. Forget what is going on in my body today, she was saying; I am okay because my grandbaby was at church today.

I used this verse recently, but it is appropriate again today. Linda had her priorities exactly right, just like Lois did.

For I am mindful of the sincere faith within you,
which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois
and your mother Eunice,
and I am sure that it is in you as well.
2 Timothy 1:5
