P-O-W-E-R-F-U-L! Good Words

A couple of years ago we had a visiting minister at our church. He liked to use the word powerful, but he said it more like this: P-O-W-E-R-F-U-L!! It’s not that he was a loud preacher. He was a gentle man, as I recall, but he liked to punctuate his conversation with that word POWERFUL.

He did a little pump kind of thing with his fist when he said it, too. I think if I had been close enough, I might have felt a puff of air from his pursed lips as he forced the word between them. He enjoyed getting little kids to try to say it like he did.

You and I are P-O-W-E-R-F-U-L!! We can do much good with the words that come from our lips. We have a lot of power there.

Yesterday we talked about God’s strength when we are weary. Anxiety makes us weary. Discouragement makes us weary. Feeling judged makes us weary. Those things make other people weary, too. We have the power to help them when that happens. We can give a good word.

We can say, I believe in you.

We can say, I know you are trying as hard as you can — and your “hard as you can” is amazing!

We can say, I’m proud of you.

We can say, you are a success. Way to go!

Last summer Ray and I stood on the shore of the St. Lawrence River where Lake Ontario empties into it.

It’s waves were P-O-W-E-R-F-U-L!! You and I are not mighty rivers. Each of us is just one small person in the midst of a great big world, but we have power, power to lift up the anxious heart and make it glad.

Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs it down,
But a good word makes it glad.
Proverbs 12:25
