Pour Out Your Heart

Once a godly gentleman whom I deeply respected heard one of Ray’s prayers and then chided him. I don’t remember the gentleman’s words exactly but their meaning went something like this: “I don’t think you should talk to God about that. His concerns are loftier than that.”

As much as I respected this man who is now at home with Jesus, he missed it on that one. How can we obey this teaching from 1 Thessalonians if we limit our prayers only to lofty concerns?

Rejoice always;
pray without ceasing;
in everything give thanks;
for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-17

God wants to hear it all. As we read Psalm after Psalm at church on Sunday night, a verse from Psalm 62 stood out.

Trust in Him at all times, O people;
Pour out your heart before Him;
God is a refuge for us.
Psalm 62:8

This is a verse you can cling to every single day as you homeschool your children. Absolutely nothing in your life or the life of your child is too small or too big to mention to the God Who made the tiniest snowflake and the largest star.

The God Who was there at Jesus’ wonderful birth and His terrible crucifixion cares about your wonderful and terrible concerns. God spoke light into existence on the very first day, but He waited for centuries to send Jesus at just the right moment. He knows when He should answer and how.

God wants to hear you. Every time you pour out your heart, He is there to catch what you pour. He will do exactly what will bless your heart and your life and your children the most — in His time and in His wisdom. As Psalm 62:8 says, we can trust Him at all times — in the sweetest moments and in the most tragic.

Sometimes God’s answers are incomprehensible to us, but the God Who let Jesus die and then raised Him up again knows exactly what He is doing. In the garden, Jesus asked for a different outcome than what God had planned.

“My Father, if it is possible,
let this cup pass from Me;
yet not as I will,
but as You will.”
Matthew 26:39

When God said, “No,” Jesus kept trusting. His trust was well-placed. We can trust Him, too. Let’s read that again:

Trust in Him at all times, O people;
Pour out your heart before Him;
God is a refuge for us.
Psalm 62:8

  1. Absolutely one of my favorite verses that has sustained me in all manner of circumstances! Knowing He even counts my tears reassures me that He cares!!

  2. Thank you for these words today–I needed them. I’ve gotten a bit behind on reading not just your “Daily Encouragements” but the computer and emails as a whole. Just sat down for a few minutes to see how bad I was behind. Sometimes life hits hard, but then you reminded us of God’s words and how He is there, caring, working. He already knows what is going on in our lives but is waiting for us to pour out our hearts to Him. I can do that.

  3. Yes, this is so important to remember and for us to teach our children that their prayers, no matter how tiny they might be, are heard by God and he loves to hear from all of his children.
    Thank you for reminding us of this Charlene!
