May I introduce you to our newest grandchild. Wesley Richard McCurdy was born on Wednesday, September 11, 2013. The happy parents are our daughter Mary Evelyn and her husband Nate. Two-year-old Clara is his big sister.

Wesley is named for his two grandfathers, Raymond Wesley Notgrass and Richard McCurdy and also for his great-grandfather Wesley Notgrass. A namesake for Ray–I am so grateful to Nate and Mev. If ever there was a man who deserved a namesake, it is my precious husband Ray. What a jewel he is, and what a servant. When Wesley was less than twenty-four hours old, Ray was off to the dentist with my mother who had broken a crown the day before. That is just how he is–all the time. Wesley’s other granddaddy Richard is a servant, too. You have great grandpas to look up to and emulate, Wesley, and wonderful parents who will teach you to do just that.

As you can imagine, we have been living precious moments for the last several days. Mary Evelyn and her family were sitting at our supper table when the first labor pain hit. The next morning I was at their house overseeing Clara’s bath time before the two of us headed off for a day together. That night Ray and I walked into the birthing room with Clara to meet her new little brother and our new grandbaby. Alongside Nate’s parents, we found out that it was a boy and heard his precious name for the first time.

Later that night Ray and I shared a twin bed in an extra room at the birthing center. Clara was at our feet in a pack ‘n play. For a little while, Clara and her mommy’s old doll Katy joined us. Just like the monkeys in the song, “There were four in the bed and the” oldest one got up and went to the recliner! Well, I don’t guess the song goes exactly like that. At one point during the night, Ray spoke quietly to me in the darkness, reminding me that this was our one hundredth night away from home this year. I was hoping night one hundred would be a special one–it was!

Later on Thursday I got to see Wesley meet his Aunt Bethany, cousin Eva, and Great-Grandmother for the first time and to watch our daughters share the sweet joy of motherhood.

I knew when we took this picture on September 1 that it would be out of date very soon, but I wanted this record of our family at that moment. They were all sweet to oblige.

At 8:47 p.m. on September 11, God gave us the moment that Wesley was born. Our lives are forever changed because of that moment.

One day Jesus looked up into a sycamore tree and saw Zaccheus, a short man who had climbed into the tree so that he could see Jesus.

When Jesus came to the place,
He looked up and said to him,
“Zaccheus, hurry and come down,
for today I must stay at your house.”
Luke 19:5, NASB

Zaccheus had a precious life-changing moment that day. Each of our todays is filled with moments. Be sure to cherish yours today.

  2. Oh, we are so happy that little baby is here and that everyone is doing well. It just so happens that Sept. 11 is Lynn’s birthday, as well. I can’t wait to give him the news when he gets home from work this evening. It will be good to meet little Wesley. Congratulations to your whole family!
