Preparing Our Children

The river that is closest to our house is the Roaring River. When I went wading in it recently with some of our grandchildren, the bravest one and I walked out into the middle. The water was fresh and cool and gentle that day–nothing roaring about it.

When we first moved here, I wondered at the name because I had never seen it roar. The trouble is that sometimes it does roar — and rise — fast! When that happens, we can see the words of “The Wise Man Built His House Upon the Rock” in action:

Oh, the rains came down and the floods came up.
The rains came down and the floods came up.
The rains came down and the floods came up . . . .

Every child deserves to have parents who prepare them for the times that the floods come up. We do that by teaching them the words of Jesus and training them to obey Him. We do that when the water is peaceful and calm . . .

. . . so they are ready when the floods come up.

Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them,
may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock.
And the rain fell, and the floods came,
and the winds blew and slammed against that house;
and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock.
Matthew 7:24-25
