Refreshing Rest

It’s Friday. The four-capital-letter abbreviation we see sometimes in relation to Friday is irreverent. Let’s  go ahead and say the wonderful — and respectful — entire four words: Thank God it’s Friday! I pray that we all find times of “refreshing rest” during this weekend.

Near the end of the letter to the Romans, Paul asks the Christians in Rome to pray for him:

. . . so that I may come to you in joy
by the will of God
and find refreshing rest in your company.
Romans 15:32

I love how Paul’s letters tell people what they are doing right. His letters teach and encourage. Paul noticed and appreciated the good that others did and he complimented them for it. Again and again, he acknowledged and expressed appreciation for those who had refreshed him and others.

. . . besides our comfort,
we rejoiced even much more for the joy of Titus,
because his spirit has been refreshed by you all.
2 Corinthians 7:13

The Lord grant mercy to the house of Onesiphorus,
for he often refreshed me
and was not ashamed of my chains . . .
2 Timothy 1:16

For I have come to have much joy
and comfort in your love,
because the hearts of the saints
have been refreshed through you, brother.
Philemon 1:7

In the hustle and bustle of life and homeschooling and rearing children and managing all those thousands of things you take care of every day, I pray that you have “refreshing rest.” What a wonderful way to describe home.

Thus says the Lord,
“Stand by the ways and see
and ask for the ancient paths,
Where the good way is, and walk in it;
And you will find rest for your souls.
Jeremiah 6:16
