Repeating Joy

Repetition. Repetition. Repetition. Our first reaction to repetition might be negative, but we all actually enjoy repetition in many ways. For example, I’m glad that breakfast is something I enjoy every day. I don’t ever think, “I don’t want breakfast this morning. I’ve been doing that every day for years now.” Repeating breakfast—that’s a good thing.

But I might get tired of having my breakfast while being broadcast on the radio every morning!

For several weeks I have been practicing repetition in my devotions. Every time I sit down to read the Bible, I include Philippians 4:4-9. These verses are packed with practical and comforting promise and instruction. Phrase after phrase meets my deep needs every day. I have pasted the whole passage after this post if you would like to read it right now, but first let’s think about the power-packed first sentence.

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice!

God is kind to invite us to be in Him and to invite us to rejoice in Him and then to remind us again to rejoice!

Homeschooling seems like such a heavy responsibility sometimes (or maybe all the time) that we can forget the joy that Philippians 4:4 reminds us to have. I encourage you today to schedule:

  • something in your day that brings you joy and
  • something in your children’s day that brings them joy and
  • something in your day that brings joy to you and to your children, something you can do together.

After that, remember: repetition, repetition, repetition. It doesn’t just work for math facts. It works for loving and close relationships, too.

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice!
Philippians 4:4

And if you would like to read the whole passage now, here it is. The encouragement and the promises are very sweet.

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice! Let your gentle spirit be known to all people. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and pleading with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, think about these things. As for the things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.
