Back in 2009, Ray and I visited Elephant Rocks State Park in Missouri. It was fascinating. Those rocks are massive.

In 1 Samuel 2, Samuel’s mother, Hannah, says:

There is no one holy like the Lord,
Indeed, there is no one besides You,
Nor is there any rock like our God.
1 Samuel 2:2

In the Song of Moses, Moses, too, describes God as a rock.

The Rock! His work is perfect,
For all His ways are just;
A God of faithfulness and without injustice,
Righteous and just is He.
Deuteronomy 32:4

Almost every time I read my Bible, I conclude with Philippians 4:4-7. When I read it in this new year, I felt such comfort, assurance, and peace.

Out in the world I feel surrounded by motivational messages. T-shirts, wall plaques, and the like proclaim canned advice on how to handle life’s ups and downs. I even found a category of “wall decor motivational” on Amazon. I thought about writing that these things proclaim varied advice, but when I stopped and thought about it, I realized that those messages aren’t really so varied. It seems that I read the same advice again and again.

The difference between reading those over and over again and reading Philippians 4:4-7 over and over again is that the message in Philippians is authoritative. I can depend on it completely. It is rock solid because it is from the Rock.

Banks may be backed by the FDIC, cars may be backed by a warranty, a diplomat may be backed by the authority of his national government, but Philippians 4:4-7 is backed by the authority of God. We can count on it.

I don’t know all of the challenges—homeschooling or otherwise—that you are facing at the beginning of this new year, but I do know Who you can depend on and Who is waiting to listen to your requests. I know the peace He gives which surpasses all comprehension.

Rejoice in the Lord always;
again I will say, rejoice!
Let your gentle spirit be known to all men.
The Lord is near.
Be anxious for nothing,
but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving
let your requests be made known to God.
And the peace of God,
which surpasses all comprehension,
will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:4-7
