See Good, Do Good, Rest in our Good God

When you read the sixth verse of Psalm 4, you could easily imagine that David has been online reading the news because he says:

Many are saying, “Who will show us any good?”
Psalm 4:6a

God tells us that so many things are good. On the very first day, He said that light is good. Then He said that the dry land and the seas are good and plants are good and the sun, moon, and stars are good and the creatures of the sea and the animals and people are good (Genesis 1).

In Psalm 23, David says with confidence:

Surely goodness and lovingkindness
will follow me all the days of my life,
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
Psalm 23:6

When I was little, we said in unison:

God is great.
God is good.

Then we said:

Let us thank Him for our food.

And then we had our lunch at school.

God is indeed good. As David also says:

Good and upright is the Lord;
Therefore He instructs sinners in the way.
Psalm 25:8

God wants us to do good. To do good we have to leave evil alone and go the other direction:

Depart from evil and do good;
Seek peace and pursue it.
Psalm 34:14

Now, let’s look at what David said after he quoted the question many people were asking: “Who will show us any good?” David responded with faith. He asked for God to help. He acknowledged the gladness God put in his heart. He confidently told God that he would lie down and sleep in peace because the Lord alone made him safe.

Last night I tried again and again to upload a new picture for today’s message and the technology just wouldn’t let me do it. So, I thought I would just scroll back through the previous pictures that I’ve used before. When I came across this one, I thought it was a pretty good illustration of these days. Sometimes we feel as if we are crawling through a tunnel, but by faith we can still see Light.

Let’s face evil by seeing good, doing good, and resting in our good God. Let’s teach our children to do that, too.

Many are saying, “Who will show us any good?”
Lift up the light of Your countenance upon us, O Lord!
You have put gladness in my heart,
More than when their grain and new wine abound.
 In peace I will both lie down and sleep,
For You alone, O Lord, make me to dwell in safety.
Psalm 4:6-8
