Should I Keep Homeschooling This Fall? — Part 1

For several days recently, we had four generations in our house. It was wonderfully wild. We had fun with books and art and toys and dolls. At one point, Bethany and I noticed that someone had left Jenny on my new/old $25 coffee table. I photographed her just the way I found her.

I’m guessing that on some days you might feel like Jenny. I know that I felt that way while Ray and I were still carrying homeschooling around on our backs like a big sack of rocks. Just ask him about the day I wrapped myself around a pole in the basement crying! That was before we decided to make homeschooling who we were instead of something we strapped on!

So I understand that some of you might be wondering if you really can face homeschooling again this fall. Here’s one reason that I hope you will.

One of the most wonderful things that happens when you homeschool is simply that you get to be with your children. When your son builds a LEGO® castle, you get to tell him, “It’s amazing!”

When your daughter draws a picture that she likes, you can share her pleasure.

When your child has a dream, you can help her fulfill it.

When your child is disappointed, you are there to comfort. When your teenager gets disillusioned, you are there to give hope. When your child makes a discovery about clouds or insects or a Biblical truth, you are there to be amazed.

Jesus knew that being with people was such a wonderful way to teach them that He chose twelve men to do just that.

And He appointed twelve,
so that they would be with Him . . .
Mark 3:14a

  1. Perfect words of encouragement!! One of my reasons for homeschooling was simply to capture and enjoy time together as a family. Our society pulls families in so many directions and away from each other. Memories of ordinary days with ordinary memories fill my heart with joy!!

  2. My sister had one of those Jenny dolls! I had Mandy. Oh my gosh that photo took me back! Love this post…this is the reason we homeschool…so they can be with me.

  3. Man, that looks like me at the end of some days! But there is just no way I can “have had enough” with wonderful encouragement like yours. Perfect start to my planning season. 😉

  4. Thank you so much for this encouragement! I definitely needed this today. I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one that breaks down and cries sometimes! The hardest part some days is just feeling like a failure. However there are many more positives than negatives..we just have to focus on those positive days!
