When I walked into the kitchen yesterday morning, I saw a familiar sight. There on the dinette table Mother bought with money she earned at the Aladdin factory, while she waited for me to be born and for Daddy to get out of the army, were the same six items that are there day after day.

At night before Ray goes to bed or before I come into the kitchen in the morning, he sets the table for Mother’s routine breakfast — the bowl and spoon for her Cheerios®, a mug for her hot water, a glass for her cold water, and one for her juice. Beside them this morning were the silk flower “arrangement” Ray and one of our granddaughters collaborated on several months ago — one silk flower in a spice jar that once belonged to Mama Sue.

“I love your mother,” Ray told me once. I see evidence of that every day.

A Loving Breakfast Table

“There are many ways to say, ‘I love you,'” sang Fred Rogers on Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood.

And whoever in the name of a disciple
gives to one of these little ones
even a cup of cold water to drink,
truly I say to you, he shall not lose his reward.
Matthew 10:42

. . . said Jesus Christ when He came to show us what love is.

Thank you for all the ways you show love to your family and all the ways you are teaching your children to do the same.

  1. Thanks for sharing such a simple expression of kindness and love. All it requires is thoughtfulness and time! When we slow down, we create the opportunity to express love in ordinary ways each day. Ephesians 2:7 describes God’s great love as kindness!

  2. My husband is very kind and loving toward my mother too. The way he honors her is definitely an extension of his love for me, and a very good example for our son.

  3. I loved this post! And we love you and Ray! What a sweet, Godly husband he is to do that for your mother each day. When my mom was staying with us and we were caring for her after her back surgery, Bob took such good care of her. He did jobs that were not pleasant at all. He did it with such love for her. I had just delivered our son Samuel and I wasn’t able to do some of the things she needed. Jesus tells us that when we have “done it to the least of these, we have done it unto Him” Matt 25:40

Your example of taking care of your mom is precious to me.

    Love you both!
    Cindy
