This morning is the first morning of play practice for this year’s production of the Homeschool Dramatic Society, Street Robber: The Story of George Müller and His Orphans.

The backdrops — one of an English meadow and one of the orphanage dining room — are hung in the theater, as are the buildings of a street in Bristol, England, adopted hometown of German-born George Müller and his wife (which is special to us because Ray’s dad Wes was stationed there in World War II and that is where Wes met Ray’s English mother Joan, who grew up in Bristol).

A carpenter shop is springing up on the right side stage and George Müller’s office on the left. Most of the costumes have been ordered, borrowed, or sewn. Children have been practicing their lines and songs. Now it is time for everything to come together and all for one purpose, expressed in the motto of HDS: “To God Be the Glory.”

I anticipate that God will do many wonderful things between now and the first performance on September 15. One of the most wonderful is children’s ears hearing wonderful words that sink deeply into their hearts, minds, and souls.

The George Müller story is a story of what God does when someone prays. This is a play about faith and a faithful God. These children have the opportunity to tell that story, sing that story, and hear that story.

This past Saturday, Ray and I got to spend the day at our house with our five-year-old granddaughter and our two-year-old grandson. Our granddaughter loves to make up songs. As she prepared to put on a pretend play of her own, she sang and sang. Her songs were phrases and lines from hymns and Scripture strung together line after line after line. Her lips were overflowing with what her ears have taken in.

As I enjoyed the beautiful music and the beautiful message, I rejoiced that she has been surrounded by sounds of faith.

As a little girl in Sunday School, my fellow classmates and I sang the “Be Careful Little Eyes What You See” song, continuing with the verses about being careful what our tongues said, where our feet went, and what our ears heard.

Bose®, Sony, Yamaha, and other companies offer “surround sound” systems for our homes, but parents are the ones who determine what sounds surround their little ones.

So faith comes from hearing,
and hearing by the word of Christ.
Romans 10:17

  1. This play sounds like it will be terrific–wish we lived closer and could come watch, or even participate! It sounds like all the sets are in place and everything is ready even before the first practice! How many practices are there before the performance?
