Thanksgiving Debacles

I was thinking yesterday about my past Thanksgiving debacles. Thanksgiving dinner is actually one of my favorite meals to cook and probably my best, but I have had some disasters.

One year I heard about a great way to cook a turkey. It is the same principle as an oven bag you can buy at the store; but instead of buying a bag, you get a large old-fashioned paper grocery sack and coat it with oil. I put my turkey in the bag, followed the baking instructions, and my turkey came out great.

The only problem was that the ink from the grocery story logo came off on the turkey! Oops! Needless to say, it didn’t look like a Norman Rockwell turkey!

Another year I pulled our turkey out of the oven; and as I was lifting it out of the pan, down it went — right on the floor. Naturally, I picked it up, put it on the platter, and served it. What else could I do?

Now I love both of those stories. We can laugh at some of our failures. Other failures aren’t so easy to laugh at.

I titled this video “Thanksgiving Debacles.” Before we filmed it, I looked up the pronunciation of debacle to be sure I said it right. I was surprised at the intensity of the definition. Debacle means “a great disaster,” “a complete failure.”

Ever felt like a great disaster, a complete failure? God cares when we feel that way. He’s good at picking us up and putting us back on our feet. He even holds our hand.

The steps of a man are established by the Lord,
And He delights in his way.
When he falls, he will not be hurled headlong,
Because the Lord is the One who holds his hand.
Psalm 37:23-24
